Culture

Nowadays , the best way to get into limelight is indulge in hooliganism in the name of culture. This is what precisely done by Pramad Muthalik and the obscure organization, Ram Sena, dominated the national headlines and became the talk of the every household. These rowdies went on the rampage to protect the so called Indian culture. This raises several questions about culture viz, Is it static?, Are there particular guidelines to be followed ?, Is it different for men and women ?, Is there something called “Indian culture”, with India being so diverse ?, and above all, Can it be defined ? and if yes then who will ?

Anthropologists define culture as sum total of ways of living built by a group of human beings and transmitted from one generation to another. Now the coming generations with their thinking capabilities must amend the unwritten rules according the changed circumstances and this is how culture evolves. If culture is static then why have we banned “Sati”, the practice of human sacrifice by the tribals in Chota Nagpur region, Purdah system, untouchablity etc. At one time all these formed the basis of our culture but now they are no more considered a part of it. Culture is something ever evolving and it takes its own course depending upon the environment of society. These miniature group of rowdies cannot define culture, leave alone the idea of containing culture.

With India being full of diversity, How can we have a common culture? Why would a community in North East or Kerela abide by something which is Punjabi or Hindi in nature.

Moreover, howcome the guidelines are different for men and women in our society. These self appointed thekedars of Indian culture, only remember culture when women started going to pubs. They never pitched their voice when men were visiting these pubs. These punks only remember culture when girls roam with their friends outside.

I feel the basic question is not about culture but the liberty to the gentle sex. Most of us are not comfortable with the idea of women given the equal opportunity and liberty. We frown when they demand autonomy to decide their future, their life partner and more importantly their just place in this male dominated society. These things are somehow deep seated in our minds, and need great deal of resistance to overcome that. But we certainly have to do that if we want to maintain ourselves in this race of civilization. How can we hope to take-on the world if we just waste half of our human resource in the name of protecting the culture?

  1. yeah,it is very aptly pin pointed towards the so-called protectors of our Indian culture which is ever evolving actually. Liberty does not mean to jeopardize other's liberty particularly vulnerable sections of the society. The women have been facing such challenges for long just for the sake of protecting culture and it has been rightly put forth.

  2. Impressive write up arjun...
Certainly these "moral police" are not guardians of our culture, its layman's guess what they want is cheap publicity and sense of existence in the society. There is need to accept that due to enormous inequality in the society many different streams of 'culture' are prevalent and any attempt to homogenize one form of 'culture' for all, will not do good to anybody.

  3. I think the real issue is the hunger for power and influence. And thats why easy targets and emotive issues are chosen whether its Muthalik's Ram Sena or Thakrey's Shiv Sena.Muthalik's men beat the girls and thakarey's men beat the biharis. If you observe carefully then you'll find rise of alternative power centres all around and their rise has actually corroded the authority of Indian state. This bodes ill for our democracy.I strongly feel the rule of law should be obeyed in letter and spirit and that's the only way to keep society in order otherwise we're not far away from the mess that's been created in Pak where nobody is in charge.

  4. A very nice point arjun...given the definition of term "culture", it is more logical to associate an evolutionary process with it rather than succumb to static views..no doubt about that...but interestingly enough, what defines culture is still obscure...why do you think we need a culture ? Isn't it a set of rules written by powerful men of the society for the lesser mortals to follow ? e.g. sati system...what i find more interesting is that people accuse western culture for their filth but at the same time rely on them for practically every aspect of their life...indeed, we are just plain hypocrites...

  6. nice one arjun......you hit the bull's eye very hard and also at very right place. It depicts your tough and very straightforward vision towards this hooliganism which portray the mentality of minuscule Indians who claim that only they are true Indians by showing these type of absurd, irrelevant and also irresponsible deeds; and contemparorily indulge in erroneous activities. I also admire your great outlook and touchworthy feelings towards culture, women's status and finally on our society.

    All the best Dear...keep going.......

  7. Even my culture is so different from my neighbor's..We all remember how our parents dissuaded us from a lot of things others in our neighborhood did by simply stating "that isn't our culture" It meant an end of discussion.. ;-)
The Mangalore incident is not about culture. Its about class war and politics based on it. Unfortunately all our political parties have come this far only by one or other similar 'method'.
BJP - rath yatra & Gujrat
Janta Dal (and all its children) - Mandal Commission
Shiv Sena - Outsider + Muslim jingoism
Left and Congress - They keep changing the enemy. But then it is important for long term survival..

This Ram Sena will make its mark too..
